Email Genius Academy Intern Spotlight: Shayle Murray
Name: Shayle Murray
Return Path position: Salesforce developer intern on Business Operations team in New York, NY
Education: Computer Engineering major at Michigan Technological University (Houghton, MI). Expected graduation: Spring 2016
Walk me through your typical day at Return Path. If your typical day varies, what are the main projects you are working on this summer?
My typical day consists of assisting in the data migration for the upcoming launch of Zuora. Zuora is a new billing system that integrates with Salesforce, which is a cloud computing company used by Return Path. This project has me building custom scripts to pull information from the metadata of Salesforce, which I then analyze and format into Google Sheets. Zuora’s software will help the business better understand how Return Path customer’s are using Salesforce as well as enable the company to make better self-assessments.
Another part of my day includes meetings. The business operations team communicates through a daily standup where each person updates the team on their progress and has a chance to ask questions if they are stuck on something. I really enjoy this process as it is quick, insightful, and helpful to understanding our team’s work. Afterward, it is back to scripts and Microsoft Excel and Google Sheet formatting.
My other current project is collecting and processing Salesforce data to enable Bluewolf, which is a consulting group Return Path is partnered with, to quickly rebuild a large number of reports that are found within Salesforce. The reports I am helping to rebuild vary from sales reports to churn reports. All of these projects have been a great introduction into the current Salesforce system, big data management, and project scoping.
What is your favorite aspect about being an intern at Return Path?
Everyone within the company will take the time to explain something to you if you ask. Working at Return Path gives me an incredible opportunity to get a full understanding of how an entire business runs. Although my background is primarily hardware and software, within the business operations team, I work closely with the business and finance areas. This affords me the opportunity to develop an understanding of the financial structure of a subscription SaaS company by asking my team questions regarding how things work. Even though my team is feeling the pressure of the upcoming Zuora launch deadline, they still take time to help me better understand the system. Furthermore, everyone I have met at Return Path has invited me to ask them questions if I have any.
What type of advice would you give to future interns looking to work at Return Path?
Just keep asking questions! No one here will ever think less of you for doing so.
What is one item on your bucket list?
Sit on the edge of a skyscraper. This one is new to my list. I am new to New York, and working on the 41st floor is exciting, but I would like to sit on the roof of one with my feet hanging over the edge. That would be an experience.
