Return Path recently released our newest interactive experience, Path to the Inbox. This video game is the combined efforts of marketing team members Jonathan Whitney (JW), Digital Developer, and Jonathan Foerster (JF), Digital Designer. We asked both of them a few questions to learn more about the inspiration behind the game, what players can expect when they try it out, and if there are any cheat codes for the author to try. Self-serving questions aside, let’s meet the Jonathans…
First off, the game obviously has a retro feel. What are your favorite 8/16-bit era video games?
Growing up, how much time did you spend playing video games?
JW: I probably spent just as much time with these games as I did with my brother. Is that sad? Maybe, but it demonstrates the monumental impact that video games have had on me and subsequent generations.
JF: My brothers and I spent a lot of time playing video games and still do. Playing video games, in general, was big in our household, my mother used to sneak into our room in the middle of the night to play Tetris. She wasn’t getting a turn with all of us boys button-mashing during waking hours.
What are some of your favorite things about of Path to the Inbox?
JW: Creating a video game from start to finish was incredibly fun, as was theming it around what we do day-to-day at Return Path. I love how the game takes you through multiple levels that each test you in a different way while educating you about email deliverability. I’m particularly attached to the level where you roam through the inner workings of a computer while trying to avoid the digitized email trashcans.
JF: The visual styling. I pulled inspiration from many sources including Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, and, of course, Mario to create a game that not only embodies Return Path but also hits those nostalgic nerves for others playing the game. Figuring out what Easter eggs, or features we could implement, was a lot of fun as well.
Q: Any final thoughts about the game?
JW: We’re excited to share with you the result of hours of design and development work that will hopefully be a non-typical, fun, and entertaining experience that will test your skills at setting up a successful email marketing program and avoiding being banished to the spam folder.
JF: Hopefully everyone has fun playing what the team has put together and maybe learns something as well. Oh, and we hope everyone plays enough to find our Easter eggs.
Think you have what it takes to make it to the inbox? Play the game today to find out if you’ll end up in the spam folder or successfully complete the Path to the Inbox. And let me know if you find any cheat codes – the Jonathans are not talking!
