Yahoo China Shutting Down, Users Instructed to Migrate to AliCloud

Yahoo China recently announced that they are shutting down mail operations. Yahoo’s operations in China are owned by Alibaba Group, who has decided the time has come to encourage use of AliCloud mail instead of Yahoo Mail. (Note: The market share of Yahoo in China is estimated to be about 2%.)

According to a quote from Zhang Jianhua in the PR dept of Alibaba posted in the English paper China Daily, "The decision was made mainly to support the users, as we are not sure how long we can provide the e-mail service under Yahoo's current technological structure." Furthermore, Hong Bo, a Beijing IT expert and founder of consultancy company IT5G, said "I think Alibaba is giving up Yahoo China, while saving the resources of clients by transferring them to AliCloud."

Yahoo China users can continue to use their mail until August 19th, 2013. Between now and August 19th, Yahoo China users have an option to open an AliCloud account and link it to their Yahoo China mailbox. (Note: Yahoo China mailboxes end with or This will enable Yahoo China users to continue to access old messages as well as receive mail using the same Yahoo China address until December 31, 2014, all through the AliCloud system. Users who do not create an Ali Cloud account and link it to their Yahoo China mailbox will have all mail deleted and not recoverable on August 19, 2013.

After December 31, 2014, the Yahoo China mailboxes will be completely closed. Yahoo China users will not be able to access old messages or receive mail to their Yahoo China mailboxes after that time.

What does this mean for email marketers?

If you have Yahoo China users on your mailing list, here are some suggested actions (and a couple of important DO NOTs!):


  • DO encourage Yahoo China users to provide you with a new email address prior to August 19, 2013.
  • DO expect many Yahoo China accounts to bounce beginning August 19, 2013.
  • DO expect all Yahoo China accounts to bounce after December 31, 2014.
  • DO remove Yahoo China accounts that bounce from your mailing list.


  • Do NOT change or accounts to accounts on your mailing list. Users who are migrating can choose a new user name, so you cannot assume that they will have the same user name on
  • Do NOT assume your deliverability to AliCloud will be the same as to Yahoo China. AliCloud has only been around since July 2011 and only recently opened up to consumers, so you should closely monitor your traffic and be conservative.
